1858 Flying Eagle Cent Small Letters
The 1858 Flying Eagle Cent small letters coin is a unique penny that is much sought after by collectors with an interest in American history. In 1857, the US Mint was authorized to begin producing the first US currency. Initially, there was some resistance from politicians who wanted to continue with the traditional silver and gold currency, however the coins turned out to be enormously popular with the general public. In fact, by 1858, the Mint was producing 24 million Flying Eagle Cent coins and the new currency was taking hold across the country.
Different Strike Versions
These coins are also special because they were created at the country’s first mint in Philadelphia just years before the Civil War and because they were printed in two different versions. The 1858 Flying Eagle Cent small letters version is notable because the A and M in American and visibly separated. By contrast, in the large letter coin, the A and M are clearly touching at the base.
